Zach Galifianakis doesn’t really scream comic book villain. Not when it comes to looks anyway. That being said, there’s clearly something in the vocal chords that Warner Bros. have picked up on, as they’ve asked him to play The Joker in their upcoming Lego Movie spin-off for Batman.
THR revealed that The Hangover star is in talks to take the role of the Dark Knight’s sworn enemy (in brick form) for Chris McKay, who is going it alone for a change as director. Usually, his method of movie madness is accompanied by Phil Lord, who he’s worked on several projects with including the Jump Street films and The Lego Movie. This time around Lord will merely sit back and watch as he works on the project as producer.
The film also has Will Arnett as the Caped Crusader in the overly large cowl, as well as his Arrested Development co-star Michael Cera as Batman’s sidekick, Robin. Keeping this cast in mind it’s safe to say that this iteration of Gotham’s protector will be a bit more jovial, rather than the miserable as sin-looking fella whose got a chin like Ben Affleck.
Instead of carrying the weight of the DC Cinematic Universe on his shoulders, this Batman will be dealing with the intense and heartbreaking loneliness that comes with being a hero – but you know, in a fun way. As well as that he’ll also be having to face his maniacal arch-rival, who’ll be going against the instruction manual and tearing the city apart brick by brick.
Should he sign on the dotted line, Galifianakis’ version of the Clown Prince of Crime will descend on our screens in February of 2017, with Batman there to meet him. This is all to build a Lego Cinematic Universe, which still has a sequel to the opening chapter of The Lego Movie set for May 18 the following year.
