If you’re going to head back to the cinematic Potterverse, the best move to make would be to hire a director that’s already been there. Turns out that Warner Bros. have the same idea in mind because after the rumours of Prisoner of Azkaban Alfonso Cuaron being offered the job were shot down in May, there are rumours that David Yates is now in talks to show us Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.
Having already cast a spell or four by directing Order of the Phoenix right through to The Deathly Hallows Part 2, Yates is a man who can tell his Hippogriffs from his Horklumps, so he’d be a safe bet to work on what is rumoured to be a trilogy of films. His new run with the wizards might not be as long however, as Variety reveals that Warner Bros. have only approached him for the first film, so let’s not get completely ahead of ourselves.
A familiar film making face might be reassuring for Potter fans but what’s really stopping this from being another cash-in? Well for starters, the new series will be scripted by none other than J.K. Rowling herself who explains that Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them isn’t ‘a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world.’
At the moment all a wizard can do is sit and wait and see if Yates accepts the offer. At the moment he’s already swinging through the trees with Warner Bros. take on Tarzan so there’s plenty of time for him to dash off to the wizarding world before the films planned release of November 18, 2016. What do you think though? Is Yates the right man for the job having already proven his worth? Or is there someone else you’d like to see take the helm? Drop your suggestions in the comments below.
