Could this be the future of film promotion?

Clever marketing for Prometheus got us excited for a film that ultimately didn’t deliver for a lot of Ridley Scott fans. We can only hope that The Martian doesn’t suffer the same fate following the release of the clever pre-launch video aboard the Ares, before it’s inevitable mission. The difference here being that the footage was tweeted by none other than real-life astronaut, Mike Massimino adding to its attempt at legitimacy.

Based on the book of the same name, The Martian sees Damon’s Mark Watney and a team of space jockeys travel to the red planet only for their mission to run in to trouble. Separated from the group, Watney is accidentally left behind, forcing him to face the harsh conditions of an alien planet, which he is the only inhabitant of.

When you consider big releases getting spoiled thanks to the ten billion trailers that precede it, it makes a change to see a promotional effort for a film being completely new content that won’t make it to the final cut. It’ll be interesting to see what else comes from this, and if what we see online will differ from the previews we’ll see in theatres.

As for the film in its entirety, you can see Matt Damon as The Martian joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Michael Pena, Jessica Chastain, Mackenzie Davis, Kristen Wiig and Donald Glover in cinemas November 25.
