Whatever your verdict on Captain Marvel (see mine here), there’s no denying that the opening few minutes of the film hit you with something you weren’t prepared for. However, for those that haven’t seen it yet, beware – as here be GREAT BIG SPOILERS.
Marvel Studios really couldn’t have given a better moment of reflection to its founding father. Opening with the logo we’ve become familiar with and littering it with Stan’s past cameos rather than its leading characters was just a great and overwhelming moment. That’s not to say the late and eternally great Stan didn’t get one of his final moments in front of the camera though, and it hit Kevin Smith harder than most.
As shown in the trailer, Vers makes it onto a bus at one point, trying to sniff out an evasive Skrull that has taken the form of one of the passengers. One person she’s sure is human though, is Stan The Man practising his lines for 90s film Mallrats with script in hand. Apparently, the film’s director, Kevin Smith, was unaware of its inclusion which explains his tearful and heartfelt response to his first viewing via Instagram.
Just saw @captainmarvelofficial. I am a blubbering mess. After a lifetime spent referencing the movies, the movies just referenced me! Many thanks to @marvelstudios, #ryanfleck, #annabodin, and to my friend @therealstanlee for the cinematic shout-out! But if I’m now part of the @marvelUniverse, I have only one question: Did I survive The Snap? #KevinSmith#captainmarvel #marveluniverse #marvel#marvelstudios #gratitude #kevinfeige#ryanfleck #annaboden
It really was a great moment and no doubt this one will stick with Smith forever. Personally, it’s Stan’s final appearance in Avengers: Endgame that I’m really not prepared for. Until then, see you around Stan.
