Fans of Mad Max might be a tad Furiosa following new reports from director George Miller that Charlize Theron won’t be returning for the follow up to Mad Max: Fury Road. A strange move considering that in truth, Theron’s metal-limbed lady stole the show from Tom Hardy as he took the mantle of Max Rockatansky.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Miller explained outright, giving only a brief bit of hope saying, “She’s not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there’s an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.”
Progress is the key word here, from everything down to the title of the next film. Though it was tagged as Mad Max: Wasteland a while back, Miller backtracked on that too, explaining that not even that is set in stone.
“That name came out, that was just a working title,” he said. “Nico Lathouris and I wrote deep backstories on all the characters and they eventually became screenplays – so we have two [more movies].”
On the bright side, it’s worth keeping in mind that two movies are being discussed to what is easily the biggest surprise of the year that doesn’t have dinosaurs in. For now, all we can do is wait and see what vehicular carnage comes rushing out of Miller’s mind and on to the screen. What do you think so far? Would you be sad not to see Furiosa make a comeback, or would you prefer to see more attention on Tom Hardy’s mumbling, grumbling Road Warrior? Give a few words in the comments below.
