Legends say that if a director is even remotely interested in motion capture, all he needs to do is simply say Andy Serkis’ name and he’ll appear from nowhere – like Shazam! or the Go Compare bloke off the adverts. Looks like Wes Ball has done just that, following the news the Supreme Overseer of anyone with carefully placed dots on their face has now joined the ranks of The Mouse Guard.
For those that aren’t familiar, The Mouse Guard is a comic book series set in a medieval era where sentient mice are running around living out similar lifestyles, except we don’t exist. Think Basil the Great Mouse Detective meets Game of Thrones. The titular band of protectors are an oath-taking brotherhood who guard their kind against predators like foxes and snakes.
THR have reported that Serkis will be taking the role of Midnight, the weapons master and blacksmith. He’ll also be joined by Thomas Brodie-Sangster (who worked with Ball previously in The Maze Runner franchise) who will also be taking the lead role as Liearn, a new recruit to the guard who will have his mettle tested when sent out on his first mission.
It’ll be interesting to learn how much Serkis will be involved in the production, given his involvement in bringing Caesar and the ape world to life in the Planet of the Apes films. Add into the fact that his old mates at Weta will be working their magic to bring the mice to life, and chances are The Mouse Guard could be worth keeping an eye out for.
